Maping the potential sports spread of coronavirus

This new feature from ESPN hits the trifecta of COVID-19, sports, and mapping. It uses maps to show the spatial reach of a single college football game. And, by extension, it shows how far and how many places could be touched by the COVID spread from that single game. Their examples are from Tuscaloosa, Lincoln, and Los Angeles.

The maps are fascinating and really make the story.

Top fight songs

As you watch the grandaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl, you can wonder whether those schools' fight songs are really so great. Or, you can just trust this completely unbiased list of the top 10 college fight songs:

10. Georgia Tech
9. Kentucky
8. Northwestern
7. USC and Tusk
6. Michigan St.
5. Notre Dame

Sterling Forest Conservation Day

This seemed well worth passing along:

STERLING FOREST CONSERVATION DAY
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

Enjoy hikes for all ages amidst the fall foliage!

On Sunday, September 27, the Sterling Forest Partnership will hold its 11th Annual Sterling Forest Conservation Day with a variety of hikes in Sterling Forest State Park.

Between 9 AM and 1:30 PM, hikes will leave from the park's Lautenberg Visitors Center at 116 Old Forge Road, Tuxedo, NY 10987, off Long Meadow Road, approximately five miles north of County Route 72 or approximately four miles south of NY Route 17A.

Donald 'Doc' Baynes, environmental educator and historian of Sterling Forest, will lead two regional history hikes on the Lakeville Ironworks Trail -- at 9:30 AM and at 1:30 PM. Doc will explain the importance of this iron rich area during both the American Revolution and the Civil War.

There will be family hikes around Sterling Lake and to the 60-foot Fire Tower leaving at 10 AM. Other hikes will depart as demand dictates.

The Sterling Forest Partnership, formed 22 years ago, was instrumental in the preservation of Sterling Forest and continues to advocate for protection of the park and its surroundings.

For further information, please contact Sterling Forest Visitors Center 845-351-5907 or Tom Thompson 201-848-1080.

GPS as paintbrush and exercise coach

The NYTimes published a lengthy piece on GPS as a tool for running. I know that if I am ever going to get back into running it is going to take something more than GPS. But the Times talks to an artist who runs in the shape of drawings - he draws with GPS. This isn't a new phenomenon (gpsdrawing.com has been online for years), but the ubiquity of GPS is changing things.

For instance, one runner used it to raise money for charity. And the article points to Arizona researchers fighting childhood obesity with GPS:
As part of a $1.5 million grant from the Department of Agriculture, the researchers plan to use GPS drawing to help fight obesity by luring children into fitness with technology.
But one ne'er-do-well turned Ft McHenry into a big flower.

Vancouver sports conference

Any excuse to go to the beautiful city of Vancouver is a good one. But talking about sports just sweetens the pot.
CALL FOR PAPERS
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPORT AND SOCIETY
University of British Columbia
Vancouver, Canada
8-10 March 2010
http://www.SportConference.com/

We are excited to be holding the inaugural Conference in Vancouver - scheduled between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, at the University of British Columbia. The Conference hopes to engage university and international academics to consider broad questions about the connections between sport and society in the exciting context of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The International Conference on Sport and Society and its companion International Journal of Sport and Society provide a forum for wide-ranging and interdisciplinary examination of sport, including: the history, sociology and psychology of sport; sports medicine and health; physical and health education; and sports administration and management. The discussions at the conference and in the journal range from broad conceptualisations of the fundamental logics of sport, to highly specific readings of sporting practices in particular times and places. The conference and journal focus on four logics of sport: Game Logic; Body Logic; Aesthetic Logic; and Organisational Logic.

As well as impressive line-up of international plenary speakers, the Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the International Journal of Sport and Society. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic Journal.

Whether you are a virtual or in-person presenter at this Conference, we also encourage you to present on the Conference YouTube Channel. Please select the Online Sessions link on the Conference website for further details.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 9 July 2009. Future deadlines will be announced on the Conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within three weeks of submission. Full details of the Conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the Conference website - http://www.SportConference.com/.

Sim City leads to new urban policy?

I am sorry that I didn't post this yesterday, when it was still a perfect April Fools joke, but here is PlaNetizen's explanation of how a late night game of Sim City reshaped America's urban landscapes. Their acronym poisoning story wasn't too bad either.

Spatial distrubution of lottery winnings

John Reiser has mapped out 10 years of NJ Lottery winners to show the "luckiest" places in NJ.

A little data can go a long way to making an interesting map. Note that on the right side he has provided four different ways to view the data. But none of them may make you feel good about not winning millions.

Great NCAA graphics

Although it isn't as riveting as the NIT brackets, the NY Times has an elegant graphic that shows the big hubs of NCAA success over the history of the tournament. Because, as we Kentucky fans know, it is not about this year but the long view of NCAA history.

NCAA Tournament time

Basketball season is coming to a sweet but merciful end. And, no, there won't be an NIT contest here, don't even ask. But there is the 11th annual Friends of Dave NCAA pool in the online ESPN Tournament Challenge. Sign in, pick a bracket, and prove your mettle. All are welcome to join the group I have created called, FoD - Friends of Dave v11.
