Polyhedral maps
Polyhedral mapping takes projections in a different geometric direction than Mercator chose. These are maps/globes that use a 3-d object that is a flat-sided surface. A real pioneer was Buckminster Fuller who came up with his own polyhedral projection that is available in ArcMap today. I mention it because I found this great website explain all sorts of Polyhedral Maps. Enjoy.
